1400 Watt Solar, 2 Tesla Modules and 3,000 Watt Inverter

 

This customer’s existing set up in 2019 28′ FB included 5500 Onan and one AC unit ducted through the entire trailer. He had 2 AGM batteries and could make it through the night with no problems.

The Problem With Their Old Setup

This customer uses the trailer for his business Mute Sports Equipment and regularly stays close to gyms to help teach people to use his equipment. If he wanted to charge laptop, make coffee or watch TV he need to run the generator. This created noise and fumes that would come back into the trailer requiring the AC to be run and windows closed most of the time.

My Solution

A 10kW battery bank (two Tesla Modules) and 3000 watt inverter would allow for silent coffee maker, microwave and Laptop useage at any time of day or night. The AC would run for 4+ hours as well.

I covered the roof with 350w solar panels, 1400 watts total to keep the batteries full or greatly offset the AC load on the batteries.

We used one existing AGM battery for a start battery for their on-board generator. I added a Cyrix battery combiner to keep it charged by solar/generator.

I installed a Victron Mutiplus 3,000 watt hybrid-inverter to run the entire trailer from battery power. This set up has the capacity to run their air conditioning off of battery for over four hours, longer with solar helping. Customer opted for the onboard display of the Color Control which orchestrates all of the parts of the system well. It will data log, view and control the electrical systems. This system as programmed will just work off solar, generator or shore power seamlessly.

Technical Information

There is redundancy for temp and voltage for the Lithium battery including mini BMS. If the Tesla batteries are ever emptied below the programmed threshold the system disconnects and as soon as Genererator/Shore/Solar power is supplied the batteries will charge and the system comes back online. The dedicated start battery disconnects at 12.6v leaving it fully charged to start the generator. The Converter can power the 12v side of trailer and is operational but retired. The charger section of the inverter can put 70A into the battery from generator/shore power.

    I own an ATC 28’ FB toyhauler that has their optional 150 watt solar system with two AGM batteries. What is the cost to upgrade to the 1400watt system with lithium battery setup

      To upgrade most RV’s that have enough roof space for 1400 watts of solar, inverter and Lithium batteries similar to this setup will have a range from $13k-16k installed. There are many options and variables that will need to be customized to each install. It is best to have a phone conversation about expectations and value of your particular system.

    Do you guys sell the BMS for the TESLA S battery and if so, do I need one, or to BMS’s to run the two batteries?
    (I already own two Tesla S batteries)

      Sorry, I only use them with MY installs. My supplier uses a special board on each module specifically made for the BMS.

      This system will add 400-500 pounds to the RV. You can deduct current battery weight and maybe generator and power cords can be smaller or non existent.
